As a building society, we're not owned by shareholders like banks. We're owned by you. That means you get a say on how we're run, the services we provide and the great causes we support. And while we've grown (a lot) over the years, our commitment to putting members first remains as strong as ever.

Nationwide isn't a bank

We’re a building society, or mutual, owned by our members. That’s anyone who banks, saves or has a mortgage with us. We’re run for their benefit and to help the communities around us. We’re not run for shareholders in the same way that banks are.

• Membership
  Member-only products are just one of the benefits of being a member of Nationwide. Another is that you get to have your say in how we’re run through regular talkback events and Annual General Meetings.
• Social investment
  Improving communities is at the heart of everything we do. Our vision is for everyone to have a place fit to call home. We give 1% of pre-tax profits to charities to help build a better society.
• Branch promise
  If we currently have a branch in your town or city, we’ll still be there until at least 2024. And your branch will continue to have its own, dedicated branch manager. Find out more about our branch promise.
